Root Canals | Progressive Dental

Root canals have a reputation in popular culture for being scary, invasive, and painful. But this could not be further from the truth. The reality is that root canals are only about as invasive as a standard filling for a cavity.

Many people are also surprised when they find out that most patients experience almost no pain during the procedure. In fact, root canals are the best way to get relief from toothaches caused by infected teeth.

Dr. Romero is experienced in root canals and is particularly skilled in anterior root canal therapy. You can trust him to deliver friendly, informative service in Antigo. Call us today if you suspect that you have a damaged or infected tooth, and we’ll go over your restorative options.

What Is A Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is intended to provide relief from tooth infections caused by tooth decay, or damage to a tooth caused by an impact injury or an accident.

When the enamel of the tooth is damaged by a cavity or a crack, the interior pulp may be exposed to bacteria in the mouth. In turn, this causes the pulp to become infected and inflamed. Because the pulp in your tooth is full of sensitive nerves, this usually causes a severe toothache.

A root canal is used to remove this infected material and replace it, while saving the exterior structure of the tooth, and relieving the pain of a toothache.

What Is The Root Canal Procedure Like?

Root canals are very similar to fillings. First, Dr. Romero will clean your tooth and isolate it with a dental dam. The tooth and the underlying gum will then be numbed before treatment.

After this, a dental drill is used to open up a small hole in the enamel of the tooth. Dr. Romero will use specialized tools to scrape away infected pulp and tissue from the interior of the tooth. Then, the tooth is cleaned and disinfected.

After this, a rubbery material known as “gutta percha” is used to fill the tooth. This material replaces the natural pulp, providing structural support. Then, the opening is sealed with a filling, and possibly a crown.

How Do I Know If I Need A Root Canal?

Root canals are used to treat infected teeth. The most common signs of an infected tooth include:

  • A throbbing and painful toothache
  • Increased tooth sensitivity to heat, cold, pressure, and biting
  • A change in the tooth’s appearance (gray or discolored)
  • Irritation and inflammation in the gum tissue around the tooth

If these symptoms seem familiar, you probably have an infected tooth, and you may need a root canal. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Romero right away.
