Wisdom Tooth Extractions in Antigo

Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most common general dental surgeries. Most adults will need to have their wisdom teeth removed at some point in their life, in order to maintain their oral health.

At Progressive Dental, Dr. Reimer and Dr. Romero specialize in tooth extractions. They can even handle impacted wisdom teeth and other hard to treat issues. Learn more about wisdom tooth extraction at Progressive Dental in Antigo now.

Understanding Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are a natural part of our mouths, so it may seem strange that about 85% of people have their wisdom teeth extracted at some point in their lives. However, this happens because wisdom teeth usually end up doing more harm than good.

Wisdom teeth often grow in after the bite has been established and they usually do not erupt correctly. When your wisdom teeth erupt incorrectly, they can damage the rest of your teeth by crowding them out, or shifting their position in your mouth.

This can result in issues like nerve damage, jaw stiffness, and an increased risk of infection. For this reason, most dentists recommend wisdom teeth be removed as soon as possible after they erupt in the late teens or early 20s.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Tooth extraction is very simple and only takes a few minutes for each tooth. First, Dr. Romero or Dr. Reimer will clean and numb the area to be treated. A small incision is made in the gum tissue, providing access to the “root” of the tooth.

The tooth is removed, and the area is cleaned again to prevent infection. Then your doctor will stitch your gum closed so it can heal. Gauze is used to control any bleeding.

That process is then repeated for each wisdom tooth. If necessary and possible, all wisdom teeth are pulled in one appointment. After extraction, some pain and swelling is common, as is bleeding. Simply follow the care instructions that the doctors of Progressive Dental give you, and you’ll recover within a few days.

Signs That Your Wisdom Teeth May Need To Be Removed

While some people have adequate space in their mouths to accommodate wisdom teeth, most do not. Not sure if you need your wisdom teeth removed? Here are a few signs that a wisdom tooth extraction may be required.

  • Pain and irritation at the back of the mouth
  • Problems eating or drinking
  • Cyst develops next to the tooth
  • Teeth are becoming crooked or shifting position
  • You are having sinus issues
  • Your gums are inflamed
